about

A B O U T T H E L Y R I C S :

Mantle is best described as a song of ‘projection’ and ‘reflection’. A number of narratives are in play throughout the lyrics – but all converge on the edging possibility of a breakdown of a relationship, unless action is taken. The central
story of the lyrics, is that of a couple on the verge of a break-up - in which the narrator suggests (whether they be symptoms of their own projections, or ghostly intervention) that their house is ‘trying to tell them something’. This is also an allusion to climate change – and the time that continues to pass in which actions should be taken, in response to the warnings that earth/’home’ is trying to give.

The final line has a sense of ambiguity - it could be a hopeful look towards the future following are evaluation and second change at the relationship - or a mournful exclamation of a subject who has accepted failure, and the continuing struggle to get it right.

lyrics

Verse 1:

Hey, we’re falling apart,
It’s hard to say,
But something looms over you and me.

A frame fell to the floor, from the mantleplace,
I think the house has something it’s trying to say.

Chorus 1:

Pick out the pieces that we were made of,
Hold them to the light, are they still there?

Verse 2:

I see flickers in the light,
Figures in the hall at night,
Do I conceive these,
So I won’t feel alone,
If you ever were to go?

Chorus 2:

Pick out the pieces that we were made of,
Hold them to the light, are they still there?

Final Chorus:

Pick out the pieces that we were made of,
Hold them to the light, are they still there?

Pick out the pieces that we were made of,
Hold them to the light, are they still there?

I can’t wait, to get it right: a true love, after all this time.
